Whether your locks are long or short, it's important to tame your mane for work. Here are four easy, professional hairstyles for long hair. These looks are simple enough for any working woman to add to her morning routine and will leave you looking polished and elegant!
This hairstyle is a great option for all seasons and a polished way to wear long hair down. Follow these four easy steps for big, bouncy curls that will last all day.
Section off the top half of your hair and clip it out of the way. Using a flat iron, curl the bottom layer. Curl your hair away from your face (think Farrah Fawcett), working with 1" to 2" sections. Your curls don't have to be uniform - it looks best if they vary in size.
Once you have curled the whole bottom layer, spray it thoroughly with a flexible hold hairspray. My favourite hairspray is Aussie Mega Hairspray in #1 flexible hold. This will help your curls stay intact without getting crunchy.
Curl and hairspray the top layer of your hair. Pay extra attention to the two front pieces (the ones framing your face). These pieces tend to fall out as the day progresses, so give 'em an extra spray.
Let your curls set for 2-3 minutes. This will help them hold their shape. I like to do my makeup or get dressed during this time. Once your curls are cool, use a round brush to gently brush them out so they don't look too "prom-y". Brush in the same direction as the hair is curled. Give the finished product a quick spray and off you go!
Tips and Tricks
If you have a little extra time in the morning, here are some tips to take it to the next level:
- For frizz: If you battle frizz, rub a few drops of coconut oil into your palms and run your hands through the bottom two thirds of your hair to control frizz and boost shine.
- For volume: For added volume, lift the top layer of your hair and tease the hair towards your scalp. Spray with hairspray and replace the layer. Smooth the top of your hair and - voila! - instant volume.
- For longevity: If you want to preserve your curls for the next day, brush them out, give them a spritz of hairspray and wrap them into a high bun on the top of your head (twisting your hair in the same direction as it curls). Use a big clip instead of a hair elastic to avoid that pesky elastic bump in the morning.
This look is elegant and super easy to style. A twist ponytail looks great with straight or curly hair and it's the perfect hairstyle to maximize leftover curls from the day before.
Gather your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. Secure the ponytail with a clear elastic band (or one that matches the colour of your hair).
Poke your thumb and index finger up through your hair right above the elastic band (your fingers should be pointing up towards the ceiling). Grab your ponytail just below the elastic and pull the whole thing through the hole created by your fingers.
If needed, secure the twist with a bobby pin and tidy any fly-aways. All done!
This hairstyle is great if you like to get your hair out of your face when you're at work. It's also a great way to disguise dirty hair ;) Just spritz some dry shampoo onto your roots and no one will ever guess how long it's been since your last wash.
French braid your hair from the crown of your head to the nape of your neck. If you need a refresher on french braids, check out this tutorial.
Braid your hair normally from the nape of your neck until you have 2" to 3" of hair left. Secure the end of the braid with a small elastic.
Use your fingers to loosen the braid, pulling at the sides to give it a more relaxed look. Don't worry about bumps and fly-aways - it doesn't have to be perfect.
Section out a small piece from the bottom of your braid (below the elastic) and wrap it around the elastic band. Secure with a bobby pin and you're ready to go!
This hairstyle is an elegant, easy up do for days when you need to channel your inner Grace Kelly. Elegant and polished.
Follow the steps above for the twist ponytail.
Poke your fingers up through your hair (above the elastic) a second time and pull the ends of your ponytail through the hole again. If your hair is extra long, repeat a third time. Tuck the ends of the ponytail into the hole and secure with bobby pins.
Smooth any fly-aways and give it a spritz of hairspray for good measure.
